Cross armband tattoos on upper arms
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man is photographed from behind, wearing a black beanie and standing against a dim, plain wall. Two solid black bands wrap around his upper arms, each with a simple cross left as negative space that shows the skin tone through the ink. The soft, low lighting and close framing keep the focus on the back and the armbands.

Before the shutters went up, Dilys Pryce made the first tray of loaves herself, because her hands knew the dough better than the boy's. Tomasz stood at the bench with two black bands stitched onto the sleeves of his work shirt, the way the chapel women had sewn them the week the Ness flooded. He had not taken them off since. Dilys did not ask him to.

She showed him the scoring again, though he had done it a hundred mornings. Blade low, one clean stroke, then the second across it. "Lets the heat in," she said, "otherwise the crust splits where it likes and you get a loaf with no manners." He cut the cross into a round of dough and the flour lifted pale in the lamplight, the shape standing open on the wet surface like a window someone had forgotten to shut.
Tomasz had asked once what the cross was for, and she had told him it was for the steam. It was not the whole answer, and they both knew it. The water had come up through the lower streets in a single night, while the bakery stood on its hill with the flour dry and the oven still warm, and nobody in town could say why. Dilys did not believe in why. She believed in the blade, the timer and the sound a crust makes in its first minute.
At half past five the oven door opened and the heat rolled across the floor. The loaves had risen and split along their lines, four open crosses with gold showing through where the dark crust had parted. Tomasz drew the peel back and watched the light come through the cuts. Dilys handed him a cloth and said nothing, which from her was enough.
