Black and grey sleeve tattoos seen from behind
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a loose bun is photographed from behind, both arms raised. Both arms carry dense sleeve tattoos in black and grey with rose-like floral motifs and shading across the forearms and upper arms. She wears a white tank top printed with the words I HATE EVERYONE in black capitals against a plain pale wall.

By the time the second coach of holidaymakers reaches Gull Terrace, you have already cut the dead wood from the rambler on the back wall and stuffed the bin with it. Mrs Ferris watches from the kitchen window with her cup of stewed tea, saying nothing, which is how you know the Sandersons in room four have complained again about the smell from the yard.

The rose was planted by the first Mrs Ferris in 1931, a dark crimson shrub that blooms in grey weather and nowhere else. Every summer the guests pick its heads for their dinner tables, and every autumn it sulks. You have learned to read its canes the way the fishermen on the slipway read the sky, looking for frost in the shadow of the sea wall. You bind the thorny stems to the trellis with green twine, and it occurs to you that the roses on this wall have always looked like something that refuses to be tamed.
On the last night of August a letter arrives addressed to you, not Mrs Ferris, in brown ink the colour of the shed paint. It is from the boy who first tied those canes, who left for France and never came back to Gull Terrace. He asks only that someone keep the roses pruned hard, so they come back stubborn every year.
At dawn you go out with the secateurs. The first bloom has opened overnight, black at the heart and edged with silver where the sea mist has settled on it, and you leave it standing on the wall where the tide can see it.
