Margaret Tully had kept the ringing log at Holm Fen for thirty-one years, and in all that time the heron had never once let her get close enough to read its leg. It stood in the reed margin each dawn, grey as wet slate, watching the dyke with the patience of a man waiting for a bus he has already missed. Her son, Dev, wanted her to stop chasing it. The drainage board wanted the old pump house filled in. Margaret wanted the bird.

The lotus came up in the last week of June, which was late, and nobody at the fen could account for it. There had been no lotus on that water since her husband was alive. Then one pale bloom opened beside the sluice gate, and a dragonfly the colour of rust landed on its edge and stayed there all morning, as if it had been sent to witness the thing.
Dev found his mother on the bank at dusk, sitting very still with her net across her knees. The heron stood beside her, close enough to touch, looking down at the flower and not at her. She did not move, and neither did he. After a while the bird lifted, slow and heavy, and the rings on the water spread outward until they reached the reeds.
Dev never did read the leg. He said afterwards that it did not matter, because his mother had finally stopped counting.
