Black and grey sleeve with rose and pocket watch
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve shows a swallow in flight above a stone lantern, a large rose with soft petal shading, and a bird perched at the upper right. Arches and architectural details sit behind the motifs, and a pocket watch with Roman numerals and a ring bail fills the lower forearm. The work is rendered in smooth black and grey shading with light highlights and a soft, misted background.

The generator coughs itself quiet a little before midnight, and the lights on the Wheel of Fortune go out one bulb at a time, like someone walking away down a corridor. You are still counting coins into the swallow tin on the lantern stall when Mr Adair crosses the wet grass with a pocket watch cupped in his palm. He has run this fair since before the war and has never once been late for anything, so you know the watch has stopped and he wants it mended before the Michaelmas run.

You take it to the trailer where the stove is still warm and ease the back off with a hairpin. Inside sits a brass ring-bail, a tiny engraved rose on the inner case, and a swallow no bigger than a fingernail, its wing caught against the balance wheel. Whoever made it wanted it to fly. You free the bird with a sliver of chamois and wind the crown until the second hand takes its first hesitant step.
Mr Adair watches from the doorway, hat turning in his hands. The watch was his wife's, he says. She sold roses from the lantern stall for thirty summers, and she used to claim a swallow wound into a clock was the only honest thing a travelling fair could own, since everything else packed up and moved on at the next town. He asks you what time it is, and you tell him the watch says a quarter past four, which is the hour she died, and the field outside is only just beginning to grey.
When you hand it back the second hand is steady and the swallow sits on the balance as though it never meant to leave. He holds the case to his ear, nods once, and sets it on the lantern stall where the first light catches the chipped stone. Somewhere behind you the wheel shudders and begins, very slowly, to turn.
