Realistic black and grey roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose dominates the upper part of the arm, with two smaller roses and a shaded leaf below it. The petals are rendered with smooth grey shading, soft highlights and fine detail along the edges. The roses fill the frame against a plain dark background, with the forearm curving through the middle of the composition.

Nobody at the Hollin Mill dance would partner Nell Varley that winter, because her father had sold the mill wheel to the Carrick men and the Carricks were not forgiven. So she stood by the urn with her gloves in her hand while the fiddler played the same reel for the third time, and watched the paper roses swing from the rafters where old Mrs Ackroyd had pinned them after the war, grey as ash under the lamps.

It was Ned Carrick who crossed the boards to her. He did not ask her to dance. He held out a rose he had cut from the bush beside the millrace, its petals gone soft and brown at the edges, and said his mother had sent it, and that she was to take it home and put it in water, because whatever was left in the hall after the last waltz went into the stove by morning. Nell took it. The petals were cold and heavy, darker where the frost had caught them.

She carried it home across the frozen ford and set it in a jug on the sill. By morning the bloom had opened wide, the way roses do when a room is warm, and the leaf beneath it had gone the deep green-black of rain on slate. Her father came down, saw the flower, and said nothing about the Carricks for the first time in nine years.

The next Saturday she went back to Hollin Mill with the rose pinned at her collar. Ned was already waiting by the urn, and the fiddler, without being asked, began a slow air.
