Black and grey traditional forearm tattoo
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a woman's face hidden behind a white mug, with long brown hair falling forward and a striped grey top. The tattoo on her forearm is a bold traditional design with a clenched fist and spiky leaf forms, shaded in black and grey. The brick wall behind and soft natural light give the photo a casual, everyday feel.

Dear Halda,

The ferrymen have finally agreed to take the salt barge up the Coll before the thaw, so you can stop writing to me about the nettle crop. It is in. Every bundle the cellars could hold is stacked under the bell tower, and the Guild of Cutters has stamped its clenched-fist mark on every sack, the same mark your grandmother carved over the bakehouse door when Varn was still a kingdom and not a rumour.
I went up to the Hollow Crown yesterday to see the king's new seal. They have cut it in iron, a fist closed round a sheaf of spiked leaves, and when the chancellor pressed it into the wax the leaves came out sharper than anyone had drawn them. The master cutter laughed and said the iron remembers what the hand meant, not what the hand did. I did not laugh. I thought of my father's knuckles, split from the frost, gripping the sickle through the whole of the hard winter without once letting go.
Here is what I want you to know before the barge leaves. I am not coming back to the coast with you in spring. The chancellor has offered me the seal-keeping, and I have said yes. Keep the blue shawl. Wear it when the river fog comes in and tell the children the fist is for holding on, not for striking.
Your sister, Imre
