Two rose tattoos on a woman's thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman sits on a wooden floor holding a white Totoro mug in front of her face, wearing a white lace bralette, pale shorts and a sheer floral kimono. Two black and grey rose tattoos sit on her thigh, one on the upper thigh and a larger one lower down near the knee, with shaded petals and detailed linework. Soft natural light and warm tones keep the focus on the tattoos against the pale clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dance hall at Coldharbour stood on stilts over the mill race, and its floorboards were grey from a hundred years of boots. On Saturdays Tom Eddery played the fiddle there until his bow arm ached, and nobody asked where the music went once the lamps were out.

One autumn a woman came in from the wet lane carrying a rose cut from no garden anyone knew. Its petals were the colour of wet slate, dark at the edges and pale where the lamplight found them. She did not ask for a partner. She stood by the window turning the stem slowly while Tom played, and when the last reel ended she set the rose down on the floor and walked out into the rain.

Next morning the rose had gone, but a dark bloom had spread across the boards where it lay, petal by petal, like ink soaking into paper. Each week another petal appeared. Tom noticed that the ones nearest his stool had the sharpest veins, while those by the door were soft as smoke. He came to understand that the floor was keeping a count of every dancer who had ever stepped off it.

On the last Saturday of the year he played the slowest tune he knew and kept his eyes on the window. The woman came back, no less patient than before, and she took his hand as if she had been waiting for him to stop. When the reel ended the boards were quiet, and the rose on the floor had one petal left uncoloured, lying just under the lamp where her shadow fell.
