Feathered angel wings across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person's bare back, with their head turned away and arms raised behind the head. The large angel wings are shaded in detailed, layered feathers that extend from the shoulder blades down towards the lower back. A small dark symbol sits at the nape of the neck, and the soft grey background keeps the focus on the ink.

Rain has been coming sideways across the Saturday market since eight, and you have moved the tray of loose feathers under the tarpaulin twice already. Gull primaries, jay blue, a few mallard greens your nephew brings from the canal. You sort them by length the way your mother sorted buttons: flight feathers in one tin, coverts in another, the soft grey down in a jam jar that steams on the paraffin heater.

A man in a yellow oilskin stops at the stall and asks whether you have anything from a bird that could carry a person. You tell him nothing you sell is that big. He says he didn't mean big. He means long-lasting, the kind that doesn't drop out in a gale. He lays a coin on the wet trestle, not the usual two pounds but a silver half-crown worn smooth as a pebble, and waits while you lift the lid of the oldest tin.
Under the lid, past the gull primaries, lies a single feather you do not remember putting there, dark at the tip and cold in your palm as a key. The rain drums harder. The man says it was his grandfather's, and then he says it was never anybody's, and you find you believe him the way you believe the weather. You wrap it in tissue, and when you look up he is gone, the crowd closing over the space where he stood like water over a dropped stone.
That evening, counting takings in the van, you find the half-crown in your coat pocket. In the wet glass of the window the stall lights behind you flicker, as if something has just lifted off the awning. You do not go back to check. You write the price on the card in capitals, the way you always do, and leave the number blank.
