Black and white cat with red flower
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black and white cat faces right, wearing a pink collar with a gold buckle, with a yellow eye and whiskers drawn in fine black lines. Below it sits a red and turquoise flower with a black centre, surrounded by dark green leaves and small yellow accents. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills give the piece a classic traditional look, set against a soft, lightly shaded skin background.

Mrs Hadley bought the collar from the pet shop on Market Street the week the cat first came over the back wall, and she insisted the pink suited him. Nobody argued. The cat, who had never been given a name, wore the gold buckle like a crown and walked the length of the terrace each morning with his chin up, as though the bins and bicycles were there to be inspected.

He went missing in the first week of October. Mrs Hadley searched the allotments with a torch and a tin of pilchards, calling in the voice she used for the church raffle. On the third night a boy from number nine came to the door holding the collar out at arm's length, the buckle dull with mud. He had found it caught on the gate of the old glasshouse at the end of the lane, and the cat was not with it.
She did not cry, not in front of the boy. At first light she went down to the glasshouse and found the cat asleep in a bed of red dahlias that had pushed up through the broken panes, their centres dark as wet slate, their petals the same turquoise as the paint on the shed door. He opened one eye, yellow as a lamp, and regarded her the way he regarded the bins.
She left the collar on the wall, buckle up, where he would be sure to see it, and went home to fetch the pilchards.
