Black kitten in a teacup with blossoms
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black kitten peeks out of a blue patterned teacup, wearing a pink bow with a pink blossom beside its ear. Pink five-petal blossoms with yellow centres sit at the top and bottom of the design, and the cup rests on a blue saucer. Bold black outlines and bright flat colour give it a neo-traditional look, with partial edges of other tattoos visible at the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The cook of the Mary Dunmore kept a black kitten in the bottom of the bread bin, because the captain had said no cats and the captain did not come down to the galley before the second bell. Her name was Pell. She was small enough to fit in the blue teacup that Mrs Harrow kept on the shelf above the range, the one with the willow pattern worn thin at the rim, and on mornings when the sea ran high she would climb in and sit there like a passenger waiting for a coach.

Mrs Harrow had brought the cup from Hull when her mother died, and it had never once been used for tea at sea. She tied a pink ribbon in a bow round Pell's neck to make her look respectable for the men, and tucked a pink blossom from the lemon tree in Lisbon behind one ear, though the tree had long since given up its fruit. The men called the kitten the Admiral and bowed when they passed the range.
When the storm came off the Horn in the spring the ship lost her foremast, the galley floor went under three inches of water and the stove went out. Everyone else was on deck. Mrs Harrow stayed below for the kettle and found Pell sitting dry and upright in the cup, the saucer floating beside it like a small blue boat. She had not moved once. Mrs Harrow carried the cup up through the hatch with both hands and never spilled a drop.
They say the cup is still aboard, though the ship was sold and renamed years ago. Old sailors who ask at the galley hatch are given a cup of tea, and nobody will tell them whose cup it is. Pell is said to have been the only creature aboard who knew which way was up.
