A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came off the Thursday ferry before any of us, which Dad said was the only sensible thing anyone had done on that crossing. It stepped onto the slip, looked back at the boat as if it had been the one kept waiting, and walked straight up the harbour wall to the clump of viper's bugloss growing out of the cracked mortar. Nobody on Sgeir Dubh owned it. It simply turned up each summer, the way the flowers did, and sat among them in the afternoons with its tail curled around its feet.

I was nine the year I tried to shift it. I carried it down to the shop in my arms, and it went limp and heavy as wet washing, and the moment I set it down it marched back to the wall and sat exactly where it had been. Mrs Affleck at the shop said the cat had decided the flowers were its own and I would do better to ask permission than argue. So I took to sitting beside it with my sums and my pencil case, and we got on, more or less.

When I left for the mainland at eighteen, Dad wrapped my bag in oilskin and said little. The cat came down the wall to the slip and sat on the last dry stone. I looked back from the rail and it had not moved, but the wind had got into the bugloss and was pulling petals off across the water, one after another, blue and violet, lifting out over the harbour as if they knew the way home without me.
