Black cat in an oval gold frame on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black cat sits centrally inside an oval frame with a grey shaded backdrop and a dotted inner border. The frame is outlined in bold black with orange and gold scrollwork, topped with a small red gem, and a red bow with a yellow centre sits at the base. Bold black outlines, flat colour fills and soft grey shading give the piece a classic traditional look, photographed straight on against a white backdrop.

The landlady at Gull Rest had one rule about the black cat, and it was that nobody lifted her off the hall sill. Mrs Pengelly said the cat had walked up out of the harbour the winter her husband went under, and a thing that comes out of the sea does not care to be carried about like a parcel. The lodgers laughed until the February morning a clerk from Bristol came down for his breakfast and found the cat asleep inside the empty gilt frame by the front door, curled up as neat as a brooch.

Albert Tremayne was not a man who believed in nonsense, so he lifted her out with two fingers under her forelegs. She bit him to the bone of the thumb, and he watched the skin go pale and cold as a pebble. That night he dreamt of the harbour wall, and the water was lit red at the end of the pier, a lantern tied to a rope with a bow.
In the morning his thumb was warm again and his trunk was packed. The cat had gone back into the frame, her round eyes fixed on the door, and when Mrs Pengelly unhooked it to dust she found a red ribbon knotted round the brass hanger, still wet with salt. Albert paid his bill and walked to the station without looking back, and for forty years after he never once sat down in a boat.
