Fox in a teacup with flower on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A fox with orange fur and a white muzzle sits inside a teacup with a scalloped pink band and a gold rim, with a handle on the right. Below the cup, a pink flower with a black centre is framed by black leaves. Bold black outlines, solid colour fills and soft grey shading on the fox's tail and chest give it a classic look, shown against plain pale skin and a white background.

Sit closer, you, and mind the kettle, because this is the tale of how Sallow Pim the fox came to live in a teacup, and it is a true one as far as anybody in the kingdom of Hollin Reach will swear to it.

In the days when the Reach had seven mills and one king who could not tell barley from rye, there lived a fox the colour of a copper pan left out in the rain. He kept his white muzzle tucked against his chest when he was thinking, which was seldom. Every winter the king's cook set out a saucer of cream for the hedge creatures, and every winter Pim drank the cream, left the saucer, and nobody could prove a thing against him.

One November the king ordered the good china packed for the crossing of the marsh to his brother's wedding. The housemaid, a girl called Ada Strand, set the best cup on the sill to dry. Pim climbed up to see what the fuss was about, slipped one paw over the scalloped rim, and found the cup still held the last warmth of the kitchen fire. He curled inside and would not come out, not for the cream, not for the king, not for the carriage waiting in the yard.

The wedding went without its tea that year. They say the king sat in the carriage with his hands empty and laughed until he wept, and when he came home he left the cup where it stood. Ada painted a pink flower on its base in the spring, to keep the fox company. Pim is still there, they say, and the cup has never once gone cold.
