Two black cats peeking over a red heart

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two black cats peer over the top of a solid red heart, with a curled tail on the left and a paw resting on the lower edge. White daisies with orange centres and dark green leaves frame the heart on both sides. Bold black outlines, flat colour fills and light grey shading on the cats give it a classic traditional look.

Mrs Abernethy swore the two black cats had come up the lane the same week the frost went out of the ground, and that they had never once been apart since. Nobody in Hollin Bottom believed her, but nobody argued, because the cats had a way of settling on the garden wall whenever a quarrel started and looking down at the people fighting until they felt foolish. The old gate hinge squealed, the cats yawned, and the row was over.

So when Tom Pulley came up the path one wet Thursday with his brother's name still hot in his mouth, the two of them were already waiting on the top of the wall, one with her tail curled like a question mark, the other with a paw dangling over the edge as if she had been expecting him. Behind them the rose-bush was red at its heart, and white daisies had opened along the stones for no reason anyone could name, their dark green leaves glossy from the rain.

Tom stopped. He looked up at the cats. He looked at the daisies. He said, quite quietly, that he supposed he had been a fool, and the nearer cat blinked very slowly, which Mrs Abernethy always said was the nearest a cat ever came to an apology. By the time the kettle was on, the brothers were arguing about who had left the gate open, and the cats had gone back to watching, pleased with themselves, the way cats are when the thing they came to fix has fixed itself.
