Black cat in ornate frame on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black cat sits in profile with its tail curling upward, set against a solid red oval panel. The cat is rendered in smooth black fill with a small highlight on its eye, and the panel is surrounded by a dark, scrolling ornamental frame with grey shading. Red and black dominate the composition, and the design is centred on the arm in a plain, well-lit photo.

Dear Mrs Ashdown, your brother's parcel came off the 4.15 from Leeds with the string still knotted the way a man ties it when he has never once wrapped anything for the post. Inside was the oval frame you asked after, its red panel gone a little dull at the edges, and the black cat sitting in profile with its tail looped up behind it like a question nobody has bothered to finish. I have hung it on the nail behind my desk in the lost-property room at Thornley Road, because it seemed wrong to put such a handsome thing in the cupboard with the umbrellas and the one left glove.

The highlight on the cat's eye catches the lamp every afternoon, and I confess I have grown fond of it. The scrolled grey shading around the frame is so finely done that Porter Hollis, who has no patience for anything he cannot lift, stood in front of it for a full minute before he would say a word. He said the cat watches the down platform. I told him cats watch everything, which is what cats are for, but the next morning the frame was turned to face the wall, and nobody had been in the room but me.
I have turned it back twice now. I am not superstitious, but I am a clerk, and clerks notice when a thing moves without a reason. So I have decided to do what the railway has always done with a stubborn passenger. I set the frame on the sill so the cat faces the door and the timetable board beyond it, and I have written to you in the hope that you will come and claim it before the 6.40 pulls out.
Yours in haste, T. Pell Lost Property, Thornley Road
