Black cat on a blue crescent moon on the back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A black silhouette of a seated cat rests on the lower curve of a crescent moon, with its tail hanging down past the moon's edge. The moon is shaded from deep blue at the outer edge to pale highlights along the inner curve, outlined in black. The tattoo sits centrally on a freckled area of upper back, with the edge of the shoulder and some hair visible at the top of the frame.

Late August, and the Bramleys at Pennick Orchard hung so heavy the branches touched the grass, and wasps drank the sweetness from every windfall. Old Maud Harrow sat on her upturned crate and said, mind your hands, child, the fruit bruises easy in this heat. That was the summer the black cat came over the wall, thin as a rake handle, and her grandfather's grandfather had already named the orchard for the apples that grew here before anyone counted them.

The cat, Tansy, hunted field mice in the long grass between the rows. Every night she watched the moon come up over the Hollow Hill, and one night she climbed the sickle of it as easily as a fence post. She sat on the lower curve with her tail hanging down past the edge, and she swatted at the pears as they dropped, so none of them fell on the farm men below.
That autumn the land agent came with his chalk marks and his talk of cutting the trees for a car park. Young Eli Harrow stood under the Bramleys with a ladder and told him the orchard had a keeper. The agent laughed and drove off, and in the morning the chalk marks were gone, washed away by rain that fell only on the farm's boundary stones. Tansy was still up on the moon, swishing her tail at the last of the fruit.
So if you walk the rows on a late August night, look up at the sickle moon. If you see that tail hanging down, leave the pears on the branch. And whatever you do, don't pick the one she's watching.
