Black cat silhouette tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a cat sitting upright, facing left, with its tail curling down and around in a smooth S-shape. The shape is filled with flat black ink and has smooth, clean edges with no shading or visible linework detail. The photograph is taken close up against plain pale skin, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp reaches. No, not that stool, it's got a leg loose since the Harrow Years. Right. Now. You want the one about the cat on the ledge of Carrow Deep, and I'll tell it the way my gran told it to me, which is the only honest way.

Four hundred years back, when the water still came down through the upper vents and the hydroponic beds were half drowned, there was a grey-black tom called Sable who would not leave the ventilation grille above the seed store. Everyone said he was waiting for a mouse. He was not. Every morning he sat with his back to the corridor, facing the sealed hatch to the old surface, and his tail came round the grille in one long curl, like a question nobody had the nerve to finish.
Then the air failed on the third tier, and Ines Okonjo, who kept the ledger for the seed vault, went down the ladders with a torch and a bag of spare filters. The lights were out. The only thing she could see was the shape of that cat, black against the pale glow of the emergency strip, sitting quite still. He turned his head toward the sealed hatch, then toward her, then back again, and she understood him. She took the wrench from her belt and opened the old maintenance hatch, the one nobody had dared touch since the founders sealed it.
What lay behind it was not poison, and not the end of anything. It was a dead-air pocket, a cracked pipe and a fresh breath of the outside, cold and tasting of rain. Sable walked into it without a backward glance. They say the ledger still holds her entry for that night. Under the column for losses she wrote one word: none. Don't look at me like that. Just go down to Carrow Deep today and you'll find the seed doors carved with a black figure, its tail curling like the letter S. Now fetch me that cup, my throat is dry.
