Cat on a crescent moon on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A cat sits with its back to the viewer on the inner curve of a crescent moon, its tail curling down beside the moon. Four small four-pointed sparkles surround the design. The linework is thin and clean, with soft grey shading on the cat and the moon, and the tattoo sits centred on the shoulder area against plain skin with a keyboard blurred in the background.

No, sit closer, the fire's gone low and the tale won't keep if you let it chill. Aye, the cat. Her name was Mab, and she belonged to the miller's widow at the edge of Hollin Wood, where the trees stand so close the path forgets which way it was going. Every night Mab climbed the old ash behind the mill and sat on the horn of the moon, back to the village, tail hanging down over the dark like a bell rope. She did it because the moon was thin that year and somebody had to keep it company.

The village folk thought she was touched in the head, and the miller's widow said so often enough. But one February the moon went out altogether, black as a pot bottom, and the women of Hollin couldn't find their bread ovens in the dark. Mab didn't come down. She crept out along the bough, pawed four bright pins of frost out of the sky, and set them round the moon like a lamplighter setting wicks. Then she tucked her tail round the crescent and began to purr so the whole wood could hear it.
Dawn came and the moon came back, a little brighter for the company. The widow found Mab asleep on the mill wheel, and when she asked where the sparkles had come from, Mab only stretched and looked insulted that anyone should need to ask. Some say the stars are still there if you look at the moon's edge on a clear night. I've looked. Mind your step on the path now, and mind the cat.
