Black cat on a zodiac blanket beside a tattooed arm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black cat lies stretched across a cream and navy blanket printed with a zodiac wheel, with its head raised and its tail curled up at the top. At the right edge, a person's arm with a silver bracelet shows partly visible tattoos in grey and black ink, with fine shading and outlined shapes. The composition is casual and close, with the cat as the main subject and the tattoo at the edge of the frame.

Every March, Grandad pinned the tide tables to the kitchen wall, and every March Mungo walked across them. He was a black cat, black as the inside of a coal scuttle, and he had no interest in the sea. He wanted only the warmest paper in the house, which that year was the cream and navy blanket Aunt Ottilie had brought back from a market stall, its wheel of signs running round the edge like a clock face someone had lost the hands from.

Grandad swore the cat could read the weather. Mungo would lie over Pisces when fog was coming in off the bar, and stretch across Cancer when the boats were due. I thought it was nonsense until the spring the Mary Ellen was three days overdue. Each morning the cat moved to a different sign, first Aries, then Capricorn, and on the day the lifeboat finally rounded the point with its lamps lit, he settled into the centre of the wheel where the sun was printed and would not be shifted.
I read the tables aloud to him, because Grandad's eyes had gone. I ran my finger along the tide line and told the cat when the bar would open. Each night he flicked his tail at me as though I had the minutes wrong.
The Mary Ellen came in on the evening tide with her net half torn and her skipper singing something unrepeatable. Grandad laughed until he coughed. When I went back to the kitchen, Mungo was asleep in the middle of the sun, tail curled over the stripes, so I slid the tables out from under him and laid them flat. He opened one yellow eye. Then he went back to sleep, and I left the tide line where it was.
