Red rose tattoo on a forearm with a hairless cat

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm holds up a grey hairless cat against a plain white background. The tattoo on the forearm is a red rose with green leaves and bold dark outlines, with a red and grey floral design further up the arm. The image is bright and simply composed, with the tattoos and the cat as the main subjects.

Dear Joan,

The cat would not go in the basket, so in the end I carried him up the aisle myself, held out in front of me like a dish that might spill, while Dennis's nephew walked backwards ahead of us filming on a telephone the size of a bar of soap. Dennis's mother says she fainted at the sight of him. I have decided to believe her, if only because it was the cat she fainted at and not the vicar.

Your roses were the one thing on the tables that did not wilt before the speeches. Red, with the heavy black outlines you like, the kind that look as if a sailor drew them on a bulkhead with a pin and a bit of soot. Bridget tucked one behind her ear and asked where I had found such old-fashioned flowers, and I said at a stall on the Hove seafront, from a woman who swore they had come up from Cornwall in a van with the heater on.

The cat went home with the bride's brother in a travelling box he had never been asked to carry. Dennis says he will be nervous about cats for the rest of his life. Still, when they cut the cake, that grey creature sat on the top table between the two of them and watched the room as though he had arranged the whole thing himself, and I suppose in his way he had.

Write back soon, and tell me whether your roses have come back to life in the vase. I put mine in a jar of cold water on the windowsill and it is already standing straighter than I am.

Love, Margaret
