Traditional leg sleeve with black cat on carpet
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bare leg in a dark sneaker is covered in black and grey tattoos, including a crown, a coiled snake, a dagger, roses and other flower motifs. The linework is bold and the shading is solid, typical of traditional designs. A black cat sits on a beige carpet beside the leg, and a second bare leg is partly visible on the right with more tattoo work at its edge.

The cat would not come down from the cistern lid, so Maren had to climb up after it with the dagger tucked in her belt and the lamp swinging from her wrist. Below her the water of Hollin Reach lay black and still, the way it had lain since the sea came up through the lower streets and took the market with it. Everyone said the drowned king's crown was somewhere under that surface. Nobody went looking, because the snake that lived in the drains had been seen coiling along the steps every night since the flood.

The cat, which belonged to nobody, turned its green eyes on her and then looked at the wall beside the cistern, where roses had grown up through the cracked stone in a tangle nobody had planted. Maren understood. She cut a long stem with the dagger, careful of the thorns, and laid it across the water. The snake lifted its head out of the dark, slow as a rope being hauled, took the rose in its jaws, and held it there for a moment the way a bride holds flowers at a gate.
"Keep your bargain," it said in the voice of the old cable-bridge, and let something gold fall into the lamplight. It was not a crown. It was a chain, fine and warm, with a collar hanging from one end. The cat stretched, yawned, and stepped down the rusted ladder as if the whole night had been arranged for its amusement. Maren followed it home past the drowned market, the chain looped twice around her wrist.
By morning the roses had opened across the cistern lid, and the snake had gone back into the drains. The cat slept in the sun on the warm stone with one black paw resting on the gold. Maren sat beside it and ate her bread. The king's crown, she decided, could stay where it was. She had the chain, and the cat had the sun.
