Black cat tattoo on an upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a person's bare upper back showing a small tattoo of a stylised cat with a long, slender body and a curled tail. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink is entirely black. A real black cat rests its head and front paws on the shoulder, with a pink curtain in the background.

The cat had been aboard the Marigold Pearl since Gdansk, and by the Bay of Biscay the crew had stopped pretending she belonged to anyone. Ruth Okonedo, the second cook, fed her from a tin lid behind the galley stove and talked to her in the flat voice she used for shipping forecasts. Nobody asked the cat's name. She answered to whatever was said with the most contempt.

On the fortieth night out the swell rose, and the cat went under the bunks in the forward store and would not come out. Ruth lay on her stomach with a torch and a bowl of pilchards while the hull groaned around her. Somewhere overhead the third mate was bellowing about a loose lashing. From the dark the cat's tail curled out towards her, long and thin and perfectly still, like a question someone had drawn with a single stroke of the pen.
When the cat finally crept out, she went straight to the chart room and sat on the rolled-up bearing tables as if she owned the Atlantic. Captain Halvorsen took one look at her, then at the barometer, and muttered that a cat who knew the weather was worth three officers. He doubled the watches and had the deck cargo checked twice. They rode out the blow with two broken stanchions and not a man lost.
Weeks later, tied up at Rotterdam, Ruth sat on the quay with the cat in her lap and the ship's log open on her knees. Beneath the last entry she drew a slender black cat with a curled tail and wrote underneath it in pencil: Found in the store. Stayed for the storm. Then she shut the book and let the cat walk off across the wet stones without once looking back.
