Black cat silhouette on a lower leg
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A simple black cat silhouette sits on the outer lower leg, arching its back with its tail curled into a loop. The cat is filled with solid black ink, with small red accents on the face and eye. The tattoo is shown centred against pale skin, with a yellow sock and trainers at the bottom of the frame.

The lorry from Ostrava had been waved through with twelve pallets of pickled cherries and a driver who would not meet my eye, so when the cat stepped down from the cab I assumed it was his. It walked onto my desk at Hollin Bridge checkpoint as if it had a reservation. Its back arched like a question mark that had given up on being polite, and its tail curled round its hind feet in one neat loop. Under the strip light, the single eye I could see caught a bead of red at the rim.

"Anything to declare?" I asked it. The driver, half out of the cab, said the cat was the lorry's. Then he said it wasn't, and then he was gone, and the cat was still there, sitting on my manifest like it had paid for the seat. Ferris from the back office wanted it sent to the holding pen. I checked the paperwork twice. No animals listed. No animals in the cab, according to the sensor. Nothing on the seals.
When I looked down again, there was a small print in the corner of the form, a dark pad of ink shaped like a tail curled into a loop. The cat had not moved. It only looked at me with that red-rimmed eye, and I understood, in the slow way one understands a joke at a funeral, that the form was now stamped and signed in the only handwriting it trusted.
I lifted the barrier myself. The cat dropped from the desk, trotted past the yellow lines and out through the gate into the wet car park, tail up, and did not look back once. Ferris said I had to fill in the incident report. I wrote down that the cat was cleared to proceed and that I had no further questions.
