Cat reaching up on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A cat is shown mid-stretch, with one front paw raised above its head and its tail curling down and round in a loop. The body is rendered in soft grey shading with darker tones along the back and tail, and small teal-toned highlights in the eyes. The tattoo sits on the ankle against a plain skin background, with jeans and a red surface visible at the edge of the frame.

Mind the step, love, the lamp's gone soft and the stairs are worse than your grandfather's temper. Now, where was I. Ah, the cat. You want to know about the cat that came up out of the Gelli shaft the spring the roof came down at Number Four, and I'll tell you, because nobody else in this village will say it straight.

Six men were under the fall that Tuesday. Davey Pryce was the last one they dug out, and he swore to his dying day that a grey cat went past his face in the dark, up the broken timbers, climbing like there was a stair nobody else could see. Its tail curled round behind it like a question mark somebody had forgotten to finish. Then one paw went up, quick as a man reaching for a rope, and he followed that paw. Followed it straight into the air that was still breathing.

The mine manager called it nonsense. The chapel women called it a sign and wanted a hymn. Davey just bought a tin of pilchards every Friday and left them on the slag heap at the bottom of the workings, and nobody asked him why, because by then we all knew he was paying a debt.

So when you're sitting with your feet up and you see that cat on a lass's ankle, reaching up as if the ceiling's still falling, don't you laugh. Some things go up when everything else comes down. Now pass me the matches, and mind the stair.
