Stretching cat with script on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line tattoo shows a cat stretched into an arched pose, with its tail extended upwards in a thin line that curls around to the cursive word enjoy. The linework is crisp and even, with solid black fill on the cat's body and no shading. The skin tone and a red bowl in the soft-focus background sit around the small design, which is placed on the inner ankle.

Mrs Pim kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and the cat came with it, as the cat came with most things in that town. It was grey once and black now, from sleeping on the coal scuttle. Nobody had ever named it. Lodgers called it Her Ladyship and the fishermen called it the Admiral, and it answered to neither.

Every morning it stretched on the back step before anyone was up. Its back arched like a bow drawn to the limit, and its tail lifted high and thin as a fishing line, then curled over at the tip as though it were writing something no one could read. Mrs Pim said it was the only creature she had ever seen take its pleasure in plain daylight without apology.
One February a lodger named Tobias Crane came down with a fever and a letter he could not bring himself to post. He watched the cat from the window every dawn. On the seventh morning he asked Mrs Pim what the cat was saying. She told him it was saying the same thing it always said. He laughed until he coughed, then sat up and ate a whole boiled egg.
When he left in spring he paid his bill with a shilling and a note folded small. Mrs Pim found it under the scuttle, beside the cat, which had not moved. The note said only: enjoy the stretch. She kept it in the dresser drawer for thirty years, and the cat outlived her husband, the step, and the tide-line that once had been the lane.
