The cat crossed the cargo bay at the same hour every shift, and by the third week nobody on Halden Ring checked the feeds for it anymore. It walked with its head turned left and its tail raised, through the sodium glow of the loading lamps. The engineers said it had come up on the supply shuttle from Carrow Dock, stowed away in a crate of seed stock. The scanners read it as a shadow with no weight, so no one could say for certain.

You were the one who found it asleep on the warm lip of the coolant manifold, and you did not wake it. It kept to the seams between bulkheads and never once stepped on a live plate, as though it knew the station's wiring better than its engineers did. Tamsin Oyelaran, your supervisor, called it a ghost off the old Earth stock. When you asked what a ghost wanted with tomato seed, she just laughed.

The turn came during the decompression drill. Alarm strobes washed the bay white, the lamps cut out, and for eleven seconds the only thing with a clear edge was the animal, a flat black outline walking ahead of you. It led you past the sealed hatch to the old airlock nobody had opened since the founders, and stopped with one paw lifted, the way a cat stops when it hears something you cannot.

The gauge behind the hatch read safe. You turned the wheel anyway, and cold air breathed out over your boots. When the lamps came back up the cat was already across the bay, unhurried, tail up. Nobody else ever saw it leave, but the next morning there was frost on the grating in the shape of a small paw, pointing back toward the hatch you had opened.
