Black cat silhouette on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small cat sitting in profile, shown as a dark silhouette with pointed ears and a tail curling up at the right. The shading uses fine textured strokes within the outline, giving the solid black shape some variation. The ink is set against plain, evenly lit skin with the tattoo placed off-centre on the left.

Ada had counted the bean poles three times before she noticed the cat had not moved from the top of the water butt. Pilot sat the way he always sat, back to the lane, tail curled round his feet like a question mark somebody had decided not to finish. The allotment gate was still open. Nobody had shut it since Dennis went into the hospice in March, and the couch grass had been making its own arrangements ever since.

She had planned to clear the bed by the shed before the rain. Instead she sat on an upturned crate with a trowel across her knees and watched the lane. Dennis used to say the cat knew who was coming before the car turned in at the bottom. Ada had called that nonsense for forty years. Now she found herself waiting for the tail to lift.
The van came at half four, a white one with a ladder strapped to the roof, and it stopped by the hedge. A young man climbed out holding a clipboard and a box wrapped in brown paper. He looked at the plot, at the open gate, at the cat. "Mrs Pryce? Plot fourteen?" he said, and Ada said yes, though she had given the plot up in her head weeks ago.
Pilot stood, stretched, and walked down the path without looking back. At the gate he stopped, turned his head, and sat down again facing the lane, the way he would sit for a photograph. Then his tail lifted and curled, very precisely, towards the stranger's boots.
