Small black cat silhouette on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black silhouette of a cat seen from behind, sitting upright with its tail curling to the left. The ink is fully filled with no visible linework or shading, and the tattoo sits on pale skin with fine arm hair. The blue trousers in the background fill most of the frame, with the arm placed across the lower middle.

Tuesday, 14th. Wind still funnelling down the cutting so the levers stiffen by four, and Pitch, Mrs Oakley's black cat, has taken the stool in front of the window again, her back to the stove and her tail wrapped neatly round her feet. I have told Jim at the depot she is no use as a lookout. He says she is the only one of us who has never once looked at the clock.

I had the timetable open for the 16:40 goods, and I was checking the board a second time when Pitch sat up. The line is quiet on Tuesday evenings, but the sheep come through the gap at Hobcote whenever the wall gives, and last month a ewe lay across the rails for an hour before anyone saw her. Pitch did not turn round. Her ears went forward and stayed there. I went to the glass and made out a pale shape on the track, a long way off, lit by the lamp outside.

I rang it through and the goods stopped with a quarter-mile to spare. The farmer's boy came up the cutting at dusk with a sack of oats and more thanks than I wanted. I left the oats on the step, and Pitch came down to eat them with her back to me, the way she does everything, as if the room were a thing she had already settled.

Tomorrow I will write to the company about the wall. Tonight I am only writing that the cat has not moved from the window, and that I have started sitting on the bench beside her, facing the same way. Jim says that is the first sign of madness in a signalman.
