The cat arrived during the speeches, which is the worst possible time for a cat to arrive. I was stacking glasses by the marquee flap when I saw it come along the top of the hay bales, black as a hole in the grass, tail held straight up as if someone had told it to behave. Nobody on the farm owned a cat that colour, Mrs Penhallow said, and she had lived there sixty years.

It walked the length of the trestle table without touching a single glass. Gerald, the best man, was halfway through a joke about his brother's driving when the cat stepped over the bridal bouquet, paused beside the cake knife, and stared at the bride as though she owed it money. Somebody laughed. Then everybody did, and the joke finally landed, which Gerald said afterwards was the only miracle he had needed all day.

When I went to shoo it off, it was already at the gap in the hedge, where the grass was still wet from the afternoon rain. I looked for prints in the mud and found none. The bride's grandmother, who had said almost nothing all day, touched my sleeve and told me the cat had come to see the couple settled, and that it would turn up again when the next wedding needed its nerve.

I did not believe her. The cake was cut on time, the rain held off until the last taxi had gone, and by midnight I had nearly forgotten it. Then I took the bin bags out to the lane and found it sitting on the gate post in the lamplight, black against the white canvas, tail still raised, waiting for someone to notice it had stayed.
