Black cat silhouette with paw prints
Chest · Mixed · Photo
A black silhouette of a cat stretching upwards, with its tail curling down the side of the design, sits beneath a trail of paw prints. One paw print has a small red heart in its centre. The solid black ink is set against smooth, lightly lit skin on a plain background.

Now, you'll all be wanting the tale of Biscuit, and I'll tell it the way Miss Haldane told it to us in the hall, with the lights off and the radiators knocking. Biscuit was the caretaker's cat at Ashgrove Primary, a black thing with a tail like a question mark, and he went where he pleased. Every morning he walked the corridor before the bell, stretching himself up the door frames as if the building were his to measure.

The year we were nine, the cleaners swore somebody had been drawing on the windows with wet fingers. Little prints, going from the cloakroom to the library and out past the fire door. Old Mr Tennant said it was the cat. Nobody believed him, so we followed the trail ourselves one wet Thursday, and it led us past the sick bay, past the bins, and stopped under the sycamore where a tin of tuna sat with a red felt heart stuck to its lid.
Who put it there, I won't say, because some of you are sitting in this very hall with your mothers' handbags on your knees. But I'll say that Biscuit ate the tuna, and then the heart, and went off over the wall as if he'd been paid to keep a secret.
Tonight you'll find the sycamore still standing and the fire door still sticks. Walk the corridor if you like. You'll see the prints still faint on the lino by the library, and if you look up at the old register board, there's a stretched black shape of a cat someone chalked there years ago, and nobody has had the heart to wipe it.
