Black cat and paw prints on upper chest

Chest · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a cat stretches upwards with its tail curling over its head, and a trail of small paw prints rises above it. One paw print is filled with a small red heart, the only colour in the design. The bold, simple outlines sit against a close crop of pale skin, with the collarbone and a dark top visible around the edges.

Mind the third step, it has no bottom to it, and don't go looking for one. Old Hettie Crane told me that the year she kept the keys to Garrow Tower, before the north wall came down in the big gale and took half the kitchens with it. So sit close and I'll tell you about the cat, for there's always a cat in a ruin, and this one was the blackest I ever saw.

Nobody owned it. It came in from the moat with its fur full of reeds and took the spiral stair every evening at dusk, one stone at a time, tail raised like a question mark, until it reached the top where the arrow slits let the wind through. The masons swore it walked up the air itself. Hettie said it was only a cat with a grudge against gravity, but she left a dish of milk on the landing all the same.

One wet spring the cook's girl, Bessie Quill, found little prints in the soot of the chapel floor, climbing the wall toward a window nobody had glazed in forty years. She followed them up with a candle and a heel of her own bread. At the top, pressed into the damp mortar, was one paw print with a bead of red sealing wax stuck to it, a heart Bessie had dropped that morning from a letter she was too shy to send. She laughed until she cried, and she left the cat a second heart on the sill.

They say the prints still rise up the wall of Garrow Tower, one for every evening the cat climbed, and the last one is always red. On a still night you can count them from the bottom. Hettie would tell you there's nothing at the top but sky and a few starlings. Bessie used to say there was a cat sitting up there, waiting for her to come up and be seen.
