Fine line cat with paw prints and hearts on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A slender black cat outline stretches upward with its tail curled high, shown in fine, even linework. Above it sit three small paw prints and several small hearts, with one heart filled in red and the rest in black. The design is set against plain skin with soft natural lighting, and the open composition keeps the cat as the clear focus.

Nell Grady had kept the signal box at Thornleigh Junction for nineteen years, and the only thing that had ever come to her door uninvited was the cat. It arrived the winter the coal merchant shut up shop, a thin black creature with a tail like a question mark, and it sat on the top step until somebody opened a tin of pilchards.

The 6.14 came through at dusk with its lamps swinging across the points. Nell logged it in the book, pulled the lever, and watched the cat sit up on the platform edge, unbothered by the rush of air. "You'll be wanting to be somewhere else," she told it. It stretched tall on its hind legs as if it understood, then trotted off along the cinders and left a line of small prints in the frost.

On the Friday the telephone to Carlisle went dead. Nell took the hand lamp and walked the line south, counting sleepers, until she found the cat sitting beside a culvert where a crack ran through the rail. It had been there some time, she supposed, watching the iron the way she watched the signals. She knelt, pressed her palm to the cold steel, and felt the faint hum that meant trouble.

By morning the fitters had replaced the length and the bell was ringing true. Nell came back up the embankment with frost on her collar and found the cat waiting on the step as though it had never left. She opened the tin, then left the door ajar behind her, and the small prints led straight in.
