Black cat and paw prints on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A small black cat with a long curled tail is drawn in fine, solid linework, with a trail of paw prints above it and a single red heart on one paw print. The black ink dominates, and the red heart is the only colour accent. The tattoo is centred on the upper chest against plain skin, with the subject's face out of frame.

Mind the lamp and sit close, because the oil is low and I will not waste the good wick on a tale you have half heard already. Yes, that one. The cat on the Bellwether. Her name was Mab, grey as old pewter, and every night before the lights dimmed she walked the full length of that ship, because she believed it belonged to her and nobody had ever told her otherwise.

The Bellwether had been seven hundred years out from Sol, with her crew sleeping in cold drawers and waking only to check the gauges. Then one night a boy called Tobiah Quill, who kept the engine hatches and had no business with anything but grease, found paw prints in the frost on the observation glass. They ran from the cargo hold, up past the sealed hatches, and stopped dead at the foot of an old ladder nobody had climbed since the first crew. Mab had been asleep on his bunk all evening. He had seen her there himself.
So he went up after them with a torch in one hand and a tin of biscuits in the other, through crawlways so narrow his shoulders scraped the ribs, until he reached the seed vault. There she sat on a shelf of frozen barley, tail curled like a question mark, watching him come with the look of a creature who had been expecting him for a week. On the tin beside her was a red wax seal the medic, Ada Voss, had pressed there years before, a small heart stamped over a footprint, to mark the tins she had tested and trusted.
Tobiah sat down on an upturned crate and opened the biscuits, and Mab came and ate from his palm as if the vault had always been her idea. When he climbed back down, the prints in the frost had already faded. The ship's log that night records one line in his careful hand: fauna present, all accounted for.
