Cat and paw prints on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A black cat silhouette with its tail curling upwards sits beneath a trail of paw prints, with one small red heart among the prints. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fill and no shading. The tattoo is centred on pale skin against a dark top, with a hand partly visible at the left edge.

The cat came in through the fire door just as Mr Pollard started the last waltz, and by the time I'd reached the stage with the mop it had already walked the length of the sprung floor, leaving small damp prints in the French chalk we'd scattered for the quickstep. Nobody else seemed to notice. The couples went on turning under the mirror ball, and the cat padded along the edge of the dance floor as if it had an appointment.

The prints led me to the foot of the staircase, where a red satin glove lay crumpled beside a single sequin shaped like a heart. I knew the glove. Dolores Finch had left at half nine in a temper, her fiancé's cufflinks still in her coat pocket, swearing she'd never come back to the Regal again. The cat sat on the bottom step with its tail curled up like a question mark and watched me pick up the glove, then rose and climbed the stairs without looking back.
I followed it up to the balcony, where Dolores was sitting alone with her shoes in her lap. She looked up, saw the cat winding round her ankles, and laughed in a wet, surprised way that made me put the glove down on the rail beside her. Below us the waltz ended and the band began packing away. By morning the chalk on the floor had been swept clean, but Mr Pollard swore he found one more small red sequin by the fire door, and I've never told him where I think it came from.
