Realistic black cat tattoo on the upper arm, set against blue watercolour splashes with red crosshair lines and red streaks.

Black cat with blue splash on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black cat looks upward in the upper part of the design, while its yellow eyes sit in the lower section below a red crosshair. The cat is shaded realistically with highlights on its fur, and black ink drips down from its lower body. Loose blue watercolour splashes and red streaks and spatter frame the image, giving a mix of colour and black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift in Calder House had been broken since the spring, so everyone climbed, and everyone passed the cat on the eleventh landing. It belonged to nobody. It sat on the windowsill with its back to the stairwell and looked up at the sky above the car park as though the sky owed it rent. Nobody fed it, and it never seemed hungry.

Old Mr Pryce on the ninth floor said the cat was a warden. Each night, he said, it went down the stairs one step at a time, counting, and when it reached the bottom it sat by the bin store and waited for whoever came home late. Those it stared at were let through. Those it ignored were followed to their doors. The night the Kowalski boy in flat 14 ran a fever so high his mother could not wake him, the cat sat outside her door and yowled until she came out, and Dolores from the office swore it had been sitting on the stairs before anyone rang anyone.

In the autumn the council sent a man with a clipboard. He said the cat was a stray with no business in a block of flats, and he had a carrier in the van. Dolores held the banister and said nothing. The cat walked down ahead of him, slowly, as if to make sure he could keep up. At the bottom it sat exactly where it always sat and did not move, and the man stood in the cold for a long time before he drove away.

The next morning the lift was still broken. Someone had painted a red line across the wall of the eleventh landing where the new pipe would run, and a second line straight down to meet it. The cat sat at the place where they crossed, its eyes like two lamps, looking up at the sky, and nobody moved it again.
