A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this tale is older than the wall and the wall is older than your grandmothers. Out past the salt flats there was a town called Hollin Reach, and the lamps there had gone out the year the grid drowned. Nobody could see the cliff road after dark. Nobody except Mother Ysolde's cat.

The cat was black at the edges and brown where the dust had worked into her coat, the colour of stewed tea, and she had two green eyes that held the last of the sun longer than any lens the engineers ever made. Every night she sat on the gatepost and watched the switchbacks. When a caravan of salt-carriers came up with their headlamps dead, she would yowl once, low and rough, and the drivers would follow that green light the way sailors follow a star.

One night in the hungry winter, a girl named Pell set out alone along the dead road with a crate of seed stock strapped to her back, and the wind came off the flats thick enough to bury a mule. Ysolde had died that autumn and lay under the chapel steps, so it was the cat who climbed onto the wall and waited. Pell swore afterwards she saw those eyes burning a hundred yards off, then fifty, then level with her knee, leading her down the stone steps one at a time until her boots found the gate.

Pell kept the seed, and the cat kept the road, and every child in Hollin Reach is told to look for green light in the dark before they learn their letters. That is all the tale holds. The fire is nearly out, so off to bed with you.
