Black cat with curling tail on lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black cat sits in profile, with a slender curling tail that loops out to the left and ends in a fine spiral. The linework is thin and the cat's head and ears are filled with solid black ink, with no shading or other colours. The tattoo is centred on lower back skin, with the top edge of white underwear visible across the bottom of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The ovens were still ticking when the cat came back, sitting on the flour sacks by the back door as if she paid the rent. Mr Okafor says she belongs to nobody, but she was on the step this morning with her tail wound round her feet like a bit of wire somebody had bent into a question mark. She looked at the bread the way the inspector looks at a sum that does not add up.
I gave her the heel of the tin loaf, which was a mistake, because now she thinks the back door is a shop. She ate it neatly, never once looking away from me, then climbed onto the windowsill where the proving baskets sit and watched the street go from black to navy to the colour of weak tea.
Here is the thing I meant to tell you. Last week the flour delivery came two sacks short. Mr Okafor blamed the lad, the lad blamed the rain, and I went out to check the cart and found the cat on the empty tailboard with her tail curled round the gap where the sacks should have been, as if she were minding them. I have decided that means something, though I could not tell you what.
Anyway, the first batch is out. Come by Saturday before the queue and I will save you the currant bun with the burnt corner, which is the only one worth having.
Love, Ruth
