Infinity symbol with flowers on the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line infinity symbol is entwined with thin vines, curled tendrils and small leaves. Three flowers with softly shaded black petals sit along the loops, two on the lower sides and one near the centre right. The tattoo is in black and grey on smooth skin, shown from a close angle with the body curving across the frame.

The vicar's wife had already put out the mince pies twice when Maureen finally crossed the church hall to Gwen, holding two paper cups of squash like a peace offering. Thirty-one years since Hollins Road Juniors, and they had not spoken once since the summer of the bonfire. Gwen took her cup without looking up from the photographs pinned along the trestle table.

Someone had found the old class photo, the one where they stood at the end of the back row, Gwen with one hand half-raised as if to correct the teacher. Beside it lay a sheet of cartridge paper Maureen had drawn on in the car park that morning: a figure of eight lying on its side, looped and tangled with thin vines, small leaves and tight curls, three flowers opening along the loops like the ones on the wall of Mr Pryce's greenhouse.
Gwen traced a loop with her fingernail. 'You always did get the sums wrong,' she said, 'but your lines came out round.' They had shared one pencil case for two years, passing it back and forth across the gap between their desks, until the summer Maureen moved to the far end of the village and the gap became a hedge. The hedge had grown wild since then: bindweed, a blackcurrant bush, a gate neither of them had ever opened.
Maureen said she had meant to ring. Gwen said the number was still in the back of her diary, under B for Bramble, which was what they had called the hedge. They walked out to the car park together, past the bins, and Gwen handed back the sheet folded in four. On the back, in careful pencil, was a loop with a little curl at each end, and a gap wide enough for two people to step through.
