Black cat with flower crown on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black cat with orange eyes, red ears and a red nose wears a crown of red and orange flowers with green leaves, above a banner reading VILLERO. Script reading para siempre sits above the cat on the forearm. Bold black outlines and solid fills give the design a classic traditional look, with bright colour in the flowers, banner and leaves against the black cat.

Don't look at me like that, love, I know what the flower man says about the cat. Villero was a black tom with more opinions than teeth, and he went wherever the stalls went. Every dawn he sat on the crate of carnations outside the Calle Mar shutters and waited for Rosa to haul up the iron grille, because she was the only one on the market who ever gave him the heel of her bread and didn't call him a thief.

For the feast of San Pedro she wove him a crown from marigolds and red poppies, tucked the stems under his ears and tied the leaves with a strip of ribbon. He wore it like a bishop. The tourists from the ferry photographed him until he hissed, and a fishmonger's boy tried to sell him to a man from Bilbao for forty euros, which Villero heard about and never forgave. He sat on the harbour wall that evening with his crown slipping over one eye, looking at the boats as if he'd paid for them.

Then Rosa's husband took the trawler north for the winter, and the grille stayed down. Villero came anyway. He sat on the carnation crate in the rain, in the wind, in the first frosts of the hills, and when the boys swept him off it he came back before they'd got the broom leaning against the wall.

In April the trawler limped in with its engine coughing. Rosa ran down the quay with her arms out, and before she reached the rail the cat was already on the crate, crown gone to a single orange bloom, watching the gangplank as though he had been expecting her all along.
