Black cat and red flowers on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black cat's head facing forward, with amber eyes, orange-tinted ears and whiskers drawn in fine lines. Three red five-petalled flowers with orange centres and dark green leaves frame the cat beneath and around it. Bold black outlines and shading give the cat a solid, dimensional look, and the image is a close, well-lit view of the arm.

Dear Nell,

The rain came in off the river at six and hasn't let up since, so the stall is a sodden mess of buckets and I've sold only three bunches of anything worth the name. The red flowers you liked, the five-petalled ones off the Dutch lorry, have gone soft at the edges. Mr Okafor from the fishmongers says they'll perk up if I trim them on the slant, so I've been at them with my bread knife under the tarpaulin like a surgeon.

The black cat turned up on Tuesday. Nobody claims her. She sits on the crate of orange-centred blooms as if she paid for it, and she watches the market through those amber eyes as though she's counting the coins before they change hands. The stallholders have started calling her the Alderman. Gerry from the bookbinders swears she brings custom, and I'll admit the man who bought a whole armful of roses yesterday only came over because she was sitting there, batting at a leaf.

Last night I found her curled in the bottom of my empty flower bucket, dry as a biscuit, with the rain drumming on the awning above. I didn't have the heart to shift her. So I left the bucket out and locked up without it, which means I'll probably lose a dozen buckets to the gulls. Still, I think you'd have liked her. Write back soon and tell me whether the sea air's agreeing with you.

Love, June
