Geometric cat face on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cat's face is shown head on, with pointed ears, a dark muzzle and whiskers drawn in fine lines. Bold angular facets of black, grey and brown shading give the face a geometric, painterly look, and the eyes are filled with vivid turquoise. The design is centred on the forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mr Okonkwo, I know the lease says no pets, and I know nobody reads the lease, but you need to come up to fourteen before the council does. The cat on my windowsill is not mine. She turned up in March, sooty at the ears and sure of herself, and she sat on the frame as if she had paid the rent. Mrs Vellacott on nine swore the cat was at her sister's in Crawley, so I left it alone.

She has the sort of eyes you see on the lane ropes at the leisure centre, that bright, unlikely blue. Every night at ten she presses her dark face to the glass, the grey shadow across her nose split down the middle like a slate roof, and waits. I have started leaving a saucer of tuna on the sill, which I know is how these things begin. Last Tuesday the lift broke and I carried the shopping up eleven flights, and she was waiting on the landing rail, watching me as if I owed her money.

Yesterday I knocked on Mrs Vellacott's door to say the cat was back. The hall was bare, boxes stacked and labelled in marker, and a man in a hi-vis vest was carrying out a sofa. "Which cat?" she said, and then, quieter, "Oh. Pearl. She was my husband's. She went out of the window in February, love. We never found her." I looked down at the saucer in my hands, still full, the tuna gone grey at the edges.

That night I put it out anyway. At ten the glass fogged, and two blue lamps came up out of the dark to meet mine. Please come and see her before the saucer goes cold, and bring a torch, because the landing light has been out since Easter.
