Black cat with umbrella on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black cat stands upright on two legs, holding a red and white striped umbrella with one paw while raindrops fall around it. The cat is filled in solid black with bold outlines and a red collar, and a red flower and green leaves sit at the top edge of the frame. The arm is shown in close crop against a brick wall and a striped orange top, with the tattoo centred on the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third time that black cat walked through Bridge Street market, it was raining hard enough to bounce off the tarpaulins, and I had given up on keeping my own stall dry. Mr Dunmore's fish man was shouting about the price of cod. The cat ignored him. It came down the middle aisle on its back legs, as upright as a verger, holding a red and white striped umbrella over its head as though it had paid for the privilege.

Nobody owned it. Ruth on the bakery stall said it belonged to the narrowboat at the end of the wharf, but the boat's owner swore he had never seen it before. It wore a red silk collar, knotted neatly, and it ate only the ends of Ruth's sausage rolls, carefully, the way a gentleman picks at a pudding. Every wet morning it turned up with the umbrella held high, and the rain fell in fat drops around its ears as if the sky were only doing what it had been asked.

On the Thursday my knee gave out on the ladder and I sat down hard among the boxes of secondhand brollies I had been meaning to sort for a month. The cat stopped beside me. It didn't offer a paw. It simply tilted the umbrella until the drips ran off the edge and onto my shoes, then stayed there, dry as a biscuit, until the shower passed.

I bought the ugliest umbrella on my stall that afternoon, a bottle-green thing with a broken rib, and left it propped by the gate. Nobody ever came for it. By Saturday the cat had taken it, and I watched it walk off down the wharf, stick held high, looking for someone else who had forgotten to bring their own.
