A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had counted the mice twice before Vespers, and both times the number came to nine, which was nine too many for a scriptorium that housed the abbey's only copy of the tide tables. The cat was supposed to prevent this. She was called Grizel, after a dead prioress nobody had liked, and she spent her days asleep on the warm lectern of the copyist Ruddock, curled so tightly that her tail met her nose.

Ruddock did not approve of her. He said a cat with two different eyes had two different opinions, one for the mice and one for the monks, and he preferred to keep his opinions to one. But the mice were gnawing the vellum margins, and the abbot had announced that any further damage would be paid for out of the refectory bread.

So on the feast of St Hilda, when the bells rang late and the brothers filed out, Anselm stayed behind with a saucer of cream and a lamp. He set the saucer on the flagstones and waited. Grizel woke slowly, the way a bell settles after striking, and looked at him with her yellow eye and then her blue one, as if to ask what he thought he was doing.

He had no answer. She walked past the cream without touching it, sat in the middle of the floor and opened her mouth wide, showing every tooth she owned. The mice came out of the wainscot to see what the commotion was, took one look, and politely went back to their holes to think it over.
