Black ink cat outline on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A sketchy black outline of a seated cat with a solid black face mask, dark eyes and long whiskers, with a curled tail filled in solid black. The linework is thin and loose, with fills used only on the face and tail. The design sits centrally on bare skin with a plain, slightly out-of-focus background.

The cat was sitting on the slipway when the wind turned, the way she sat every morning, with her black face turned to the water and her tail curled tight round her feet like a dropped rope. Nobody on Scarrow Holm owned her. Mairi Gunn left her herring heads on the flat stone and told her to mind her own business, and the cat did, which everyone agreed was the same thing as minding theirs.

The Morag had gone out before dawn with Tomas Reid aboard, and by noon the sky over the Skerry had gone the colour of slate. Ewan Reid, who was twelve and had never once been allowed past the breakwater, took his father's spare oars down to the punt. Mairi said the cat had not moved in three days. Ewan said cats did not know anything about weather and shoved the boat off the shingle.
The cat came down the slip after him, walked the length of the punt through the spray, and lay across the bow with her tail uncurled for the first time anyone could remember, pointing straight at the rocks. Ewan tried to lift her off. She turned on him with her claws out and drew blood across his wrist, and he was so astonished he sat down hard on the thwart and let the boat drift back to the slip. At dawn the Morag came round the point under a torn sail, Tomas at the tiller, holding the far skerry's rocks with one hand and a bailing can with the other.
Every morning after that the cat sat on the third stone of the slipway with her tail curled tight, and Ewan sat beside her with a flask of tea going cold between his knees. Neither of them said much. They watched the water until the boats were in.
