The kitten had been stuck in the hood of the Mayor's ceremonial cape since breakfast, and Mrs Pennywhistle was not going to tell anyone how it got there. Dolly Fenn had seen it climb up the velvet during the bunting-hanging on Market Street and had said nothing, because a kitten in a cape looks much more dignified than a kitten in a bucket. Now the whole town square was waiting for the Mayor to read the harvest proclamation, and the cape was on the Mayor, and the kitten was happily tucking its pink paws into the lining and purring like a kettle.

The Mayor cleared his throat. The kitten put its head out of the hood, blinked its bright green eyes at four hundred people, and gave the largest, most cheerful yawn in the history of the county. Somebody at the back laughed. Then everybody laughed, including the Mayor, who had to hold on to the lectern with one hand while the other one tried to shoo the animal back under the collar.

It did not go back under the collar. It kicked off the lectern, landed on the bunting, slid down the drapes and sprang onto Dolly's shoulder with a small triumphant chirp. She had never once been given a medal for anything, but she thought, walking home with a cat on her head, that this was probably better than one. The proclamation was never read. The harvest was called a great success regardless.
