Karma in Devanagari script on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows the Devanagari word for karma in bold black letters on a white background. The right panel is a close photograph of the same word tattooed on a wrist, in blue-black ink with slightly soft, uneven edges. The lettering fills the width of the frame, and the skin tone is visible around the ink.

Dear Anand,

The shutter on Belgrave Road came down at eleven last night, but I kept the lamp lit because Mrs Pattnaik wanted her sign up before the Sunday trade. You know the word she chose. Karma, in our letters, with the small hook sitting above the ra like a bird that has landed wrong. I have painted it four hundred times on wedding banners and never once asked what the hook is for. It is the reph, and it carries the weight of the syllable so the letters beneath can stand flat and easy.
Mrs Pattnaik brought tea in a steel cup while I worked on the k. She watched the brush move and said her late husband had taught her that a word goes wrong at the top, never the bottom, so a painter must breathe before the hook. I did not tell her my hand was shaking from the cold. The street outside was empty except for a fox crossing towards the bins, and the bus shelter light made the new paint look wet long after it had dried.
When I finished, she stood on the pavement with her hands folded and read it slowly, the way you read a letter from far away. Then she asked me to paint the same word small on the inside of the door frame, where nobody would see it but her. I said no one would notice. She said that was exactly the point. Write back and tell me whether Amma ever forgave you for the banner you spelled wrong in 1999.
