Black geometric arrows on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A man's arm, bent at the elbow and seen from the side, carries a black tattoo of a vertical line with small solid triangular arrowheads pointing up and down and a horizontal arrow pointing right. The linework is clean and bold with flat solid fills in the triangles, and the design sits centrally on the arm against a dark, slightly blurred background.

The chalk line had been snapping across the mill yard since breakfast, and Walter Pyle still could not decide whether the river had moved or the drawings had lied. Mr Haldane from the county surveyor's office stood by the sluice with his hat pushed back, chewing a pencil as if it might tell him something.

"Your father marked this wall, didn't he?" he said. "Every flood since the war."

Walter nodded. The brickwork was scabbed with small pencilled triangles, some pointing up to the high-water years and some pointing down to where the bed had silted and the sluice had choked. A single line ran through them all, plumbed by eye from the bench mark his father had chiselled beside the gate in 1931. Walter had always taken it for a tally. Haldane said it was a level, and that was why the county wanted it copied before the new weir went in.

At the top of the ladder, with the wet smell of the Hollin coming off the stones, Walter found the last mark, fresh in red crayon, its arrowhead pointing east toward the lock. His father had not been dead a year. Walter licked his thumb, rubbed out the old pencil, and drew the arrow again, bolder, so the men who came after would know which way the water was meant to run.
