Triangle arrow design on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical black line runs down the forearm with stacked solid and outlined triangles, plus small arrowheads and short horizontal strokes. The linework is clean and crisp, with the triangles mostly filled in solid black and some shaded with grey. The design is in black ink only and sits diagonally across the arm against a plain shirt sleeve and a dark background.

The river had moved again in the night, so Orla Venn walked the new bank with a bundle of cut ash and a knife that had belonged to her mother. Every spring the sand shifted in Harrowmere, and every spring the king's road was lost under it, and every spring someone had to put the arrows back.

She cut them the old way. A shaft as long as a forearm, a straight line scored down its middle, and at the top a triangle of hard wood set point-up so the carters could read it from the reeds. Below that she set smaller triangles, one above another, like the teeth of a saw, so that a traveller counting them would know how many paces lay to the next ford. Where the road turned she cut a barb pointing left, and where it turned back she cut one pointing right. The short strokes across the line marked deep water, and a boy at the mill had once asked why there were so many. She told him the marsh did not forgive guesses.
On the ninth day a cart came out of the fog with no lamp lit, and the driver called her name as if he had known it for years. He was her brother Teodor, who had gone to the coast at fifteen and never sent word. He stood on the bank and counted the triangles under his breath, then nodded and said the road was still where she had left it.
She did not ask him where he had been. She handed him the knife, and he cut the last arrow himself, and it pointed home.
