Dreamcatcher with feathers and beads

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch of a dreamcatcher with a circular hoop wrapped in cord, a woven web of lines with small beads at the junctions, and a loop at the top for hanging. Three feathers and several beaded strands hang from the base, drawn with soft grey shading on the feathers and beads. The drawing is centred on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind came through the east window of Dunmorrow every afternoon at four, and every afternoon the hoop my uncle had hung from the sill turned slowly on its cord, the feathers swinging like the hands of a clock that had lost its face. Uncle Tam had bought it at a market in Inverness from a woman who swore the web would catch whatever a person didn't want to keep. I thought that was nonsense. I was fifteen, the great hall had no roof, and there was nothing much to keep out but rain and jackdaws.

The first week I slept in the kitchen tower with the door wedged shut, listening to the stones settle and the sea grind at the rocks below. I told Tam the nights were fine. He nodded into his tea and said nothing, which was how he said most things.

On the ninth night a storm came in off the firth and I lay awake counting the gusts. In the morning I climbed the stair to the east window, half expecting to find the hoop torn free. It hung exactly where it had been, but caught in the lowest loop of the web was a small grey moth, its wings folded flat as paper, and beside it a single white thread that had come loose from the cord.

I lifted the moth on my fingertip and carried it out to the rampart. It flew off towards the hills without looking back. Then I untied the bottom knot of the web, and the feathers ran out over the wall on the wind, as if they had been waiting all along to go somewhere else.
