Black ink mandala design on paper
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from a central rosette surrounded by layered leaf-shaped petals and scalloped outer rings. The linework is fine and even, with dotted and hatched detail filling the leaves and petals. The design is centred on a plain background with generous margins.

Mr Halloran had his ruling pen in one hand and a cold cup of tea in the other when he told me the stern board for the Marigold Anne had to be inked by Thursday's tide. Eight petals, he said, around a rosette no wider than a thumbnail. I had drawn that rose a dozen times in pencil, and each time the eighth petal crept towards the seventh like a lodger wanting the better chair.

I worked at the back of the sail loft, where the gulls could not see the paper. Dotting was the slow part. You set the nib, lift, set again, a thousand times, and the hatching in each leaf had to run the same way or the whole thing looked nervous. By midnight the rosette sat dead centre, the leaves were full of small dark dots, and I felt the quiet that comes when a thing finally agrees with itself.
At two in the morning I found the mistake. The outer scallops had been drawn for a ring of twelve, and I had spent six hours making eight petals fit inside them. I could have started again. Instead I left one scallop open at the bottom edge, a gap no bigger than a fingernail, the way the old net-makers left a knot untied so the water could run out.
On Thursday the Marigold Anne went out on the morning tide with the board lashed to her transom. I walked the quay to watch her pass the lighthouse. From that distance the rose looked whole. Only I knew where the circle broke, and I decided that was exactly the right amount of company for a boat.
